Cary Grant's kidnapping out of the Plaza was mostly not filmed in the Plaza. Roger Thornhill has a drink, a waiter pages George Kaplan, and Vandamm's men walk him out of the hotel. The film's Wikipedia entry says most of the work in that room and around it was done on a set, for want of space. Which room it was is not settled either: the hotel says the Oak Bar, Wikipedia says the Oak Room, and the two are next door to each other.
The Plaza does that regularly. It has turned productions away and set conditions on the ones it let in, and what comes of that is a run of substitutes.
Two television films of 2003 about Eloise, the girl who lives in the penthouse, were shot in front of the building and made in Toronto. Bride Wars is set here and was made in Boston, at the Fairmont Copley Plaza, a sister hotel, because this one was shut for renovation; the last scene, in the Palm Court, is the part of it that stands in the real building. That account is the hotel's own, on its own film page, and it is franker than it had to be.
Getting in has carried a price. Abel Ferrara says the owner of the day, Donald Trump, let King of New York into the building for nothing, provided Christopher Walken sat for a picture with Ivana Trump, an admirer of his. The lobby went to Home Alone 2 two years after that, and Chris Columbus says the price that time was a cameo.
The Oak Room stopped being a restaurant in July 2011 and is now listed among the hotel's event spaces. It used to have a rule: no women at lunch, in the hours the stock exchanges were open. On 12 February 1969 members of the National Organization for Women came in from the Fifth Avenue entrance, sat down in it and waited. Four hours later, unserved, they left. The rule was rescinded four months after that.
