A man lies flat on the walkway with a brush. Ben Wilson paints trodden-in chewing gum, one flattened blob at a time, and there are hundreds of them on the deck between St Paul's and Bankside. Hardly anyone walking over them looks down.

The gum is the point. The top face of a piece stamped into the metal is not covered by any law, Reuters reported in August 2023, so painting it damages nothing that belongs to anyone. Officials have scrubbed most of his other work off London; these stayed.

The crossing costs the taxpayer nothing. It belongs to City Bridge Foundation, a charity built out of land and rents that medieval Londoners left to God and the bridge, meaning old London Bridge, whose income first shows up in the records in 1122. It now gives away over 30 million pounds a year, looks after five river crossings, and shut this one for three weeks in 2023 to renew the membrane under the deck.

Marvel put the planet Xandar on this walkway in Guardians of the Galaxy, a helicopter over Bankside one Sunday in August 2013. 28 Weeks Later took it for the empty-London sequence, filmed early in the morning. A German unit shooting Ruby Red caught a phone call in ordinary foot traffic, and no one recorded what the BBC series River shot on it.

The City of London's own screen walk starts here and names Guardians and Spectre, Moneypenny with the dome framed behind her. The film that twists the whole span into the water is not on it. The walk's Harry Potter stop is Leadenhall Market, eight stops later.
