Nineteen productions carry Charles Bridge in the location field of their card at the Czech state film office: Mission: Impossible in 1996, Blade II and XXX in 2002, Van Helsing, The Omen, a Korean series called Lovers in Prague, two Hindi pictures by the same director six years apart, an American police series listed for 2026. Not one of the nineteen cards says what was shot on the bridge. The office writes down that a crew was here; recording what they filmed is nobody's job.

The bridge is itself a replacement. The Judith Bridge stood on this crossing from the twelfth century until a flood took it in 1342; work on this one began in 1357 and ran into the following century, and it was the only way over the Vltava until 1841. It has been called Charles Bridge only since 1870. Czech legend puts the laying of the first stone at 5:31 in the morning on 9 July 1357, because Charles IV believed in numbers and that moment, written out, reads the same in both directions.

Then things happened to it. In 1621 the heads of the twenty-seven executed leaders of the revolt against the Habsburgs were set up on the Old Town tower. In 1648 the heaviest fighting of the Swedish push on the Old Town happened here. In September 1890 rafts and logs loose on the river dammed up against it, three arches came down and two piers collapsed; it reopened on 19 November 1892.

Nothing has driven across since the repair of 1965 to 1978 took off the asphalt. In 2008 the work reached piers 8 and 9, the only two in the water never rebuilt after 1890, and the UNESCO World Heritage Committee ruled in 2010 that the restoration had gone ahead without adequate advice on materials and techniques. A twenty-year programme of inspection and repair started in late 2019.

Amadeus is on the same list as everything else, with no scene attached to it, and thirty-three years later a second Mozart-in-Prague film used this bridge and the same theatre. A card that leaves the bridge out settles nothing either. The office's list for Anthropoid names the Chotkovy orchards, Barrandov, two streets, the castle's main courtyard and an army range, and no bridge, while Wikipedia's article on the film puts the bridge in the picture.
